Program Goals

The goals of the program are:

  • Develop a critical understanding of key areas of the discipline of Political Science as constituted by the program in the field of Somali politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Political Theory. They will explore the historical evolution of the political Science discipline and analyze the factors shaping contemporary local regional and global politics.
  • Recognize and offer critical assessments of key theoretical and methodological issues and debates in the defining scholarship of the discipline with respect to historical, social, cultural, political, and economic contexts and implications.
  • Demonstrate an ability to link academic knowledge to political and social issues locally and globally.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of diversities such as race, class, gender, sexuality, ability as applied to topics taught in political science courses and to democratic governance
  • Analyze the fundamental theories and philosophies of government, governance, economy, and civil society and apply them to contemporary political systems.
  • Assess the actors and processes involved in policymaking and evaluate policy implementation outcomes in various sectors to include the social, economic, foreign policy, and security policy domains.

Program Description

The Master of arts in Political Science is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to become a confident researcher, capable of taking leadership over societal responses to political and social challenges – whether working in governments, global institutions, NGOs, or in the media.
The MA Program will provide you with the intellectual resources needed to understand and respond to the phenomena that give rise to the current local, national and global political challenges that we face, and will develop your ability to investigate and uncover the underlying social and political dynamics that have led to the formation of these political challenges and potentially, the key to their resolution.
