Program Goals

The goals of the program are:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of international relations theories: Students will gain a solid foundation in the major theoretical frameworks and concepts of international relations, including realism, liberalism, constructivism, and critical theory. They will explore the historical evolution of international relations and analyze the factors shaping contemporary global politics.
  • Analyze global political and economic systems: Students will examine the structures and processes of global political and economic systems. They will explore the roles of state and non-state actors, international organizations, and global governance mechanisms in addressing global challenges. They will also study the dynamics of power, cooperation, conflict, and negotiation among states and other international actors.
  • Study regional and global security issues: Students will analyze security challenges at both regional and global levels. They will explore traditional and non-traditional security threats, including military conflicts, arms proliferation, cyber threats, and environmental security. They will also examine strategies for conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and peace building.
  • Understand diplomatic practices and negotiations: Students will gain insights into the art and practice of diplomacy. They will study the principles and techniques of negotiation, mediation, and diplomatic communication. They will also explore the roles of diplomats, diplomatic missions, international law, and diplomacy in promoting peaceful resolution of disputes and advancing national interests.
  • Explore global governance and international institutions: Students will examine the role of international organizations, such as the United Nations, regional organizations, and non-governmental organizations, in global governance. They will analyze the functions and effectiveness of these institutions in addressing global issues, promoting human rights, fostering development, and managing global commons.
  • Analyze foreign policy and international decision-making: Students will study the formulation and implementation of foreign policy by states and other actors. They will explore the factors influencing foreign policy decisions, including domestic politics, economic considerations, ideology, and international norms. They will also analyze the role of diplomacy in shaping international outcomes.
  • Develop research and analytical skills: Students will acquire research skills and methodologies necessary for conducting independent analysis in the field of international relations. They will learn how to critically evaluate scholarly literature, collect and analyze data, and present research findings effectively. They will also explore ethical considerations in conducting research in international relations.
